Demand for higher data rates from wireless connectivity is soaring due to media, teleworking, 5G modernization, and more. However, spectrum is a finite resource limiting the wireless capacity. VectorWave is building AI hardware accelerators to increase spectral efficiency by dynamically managing the spectrum using advanced analog signal processing.

Critical Need
Historically, certain frequency bands across the electromagnetic spectrum have been allocated for commercial use. However, the demand for higher data rates is projected to exceed the capacity of the currently allocated spectrum in just a few years. Thus, solutions to significantly increase spectral efficiency and access are needed to meet the rising demand.

Technology Vision
Existing and future solutions to increase spectral efficiency and access rely on high-performance computers that digitally process the signals. Such digital processors must fundamentally make the tradeoff between achieving high performance and having sustainable size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C). To get the best of both worlds, VectorWave introduces an analog AI hardware accelerator that achieves ultra-fast performance while benefiting from the superior SWaP-C of analog systems. The hardware accelerator computes advanced wireless signal processing functions to enable dynamic management and optimized use of the wireless spectrum.

Potential for Impact
Today, reliable access to fast internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity for education, healthcare, emergency services, telework, and more. Studies have revealed that a digital divide—a discrepancy of internet access among various populations—still exists, even within the United States. There is a disproportionate number of households in lower-income and underserved communities that do not have access to fast and reliable internet. VectorWave’s vision is to revolutionize connectivity by enabling reliable internet access to connected devices everywhere. This vision also facilitates massive-scale smart-city infrastructure and cloud computing, and unprecedented access to education and healthcare.
