The Activate Fellowship
A two-year fellowship to turn your technology concept into a product.
TWO YEARS OF FUNDING
Activate Fellows receive a yearly living stipend of $80,000 to $110,000 plus a health insurance stipend and travel allowance. This enables them to focus on their project full-time. Each project also receives $100,000 of research support at the host laboratory.
A COMMUNITY OF PEERS
Bringing technology to market can be a long and lonely road. Our fellows take this journey together as part of a dynamic community of scientists, engineers, and technologists who share what they know and celebrate each other’s victories.
AN UNRIVALED NETWORK
We facilitate connections between fellows and our broad network of industry executives, investors, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and other experts from academia, industry, government, and finance—any of whom can serve as advisors or partners.
WORLD-CLASS RESEARCH LABS
Fellows are able to access world-class research tools, equipment, facilities, and expertise through collaboration with the host laboratory. Fellows fully own or jointly own all intellectual property developed during their two-year fellowship term.
Our experienced team meets with fellows one-on-one on a regular basis to help develop priorities, provide guidance, and make connections to our broader network of advisors, industry experts, and investors.
Tailored for scientists and engineers and delivered on a weekly basis, our startup curriculum includes sessions on core business and product development concepts, VIP speakers, skill development workshops, and shared learning from other Activate Fellows and alumni.
We operate each Activate location in partnership with a world-class host laboratory and supported by a dedicated local team. Activate Fellows embed at the host laboratory where they can collaborate with world-leading experts and access facilities to advance their project.
The birthplace of the Activate Fellowship, our Berkeley, CA location is hosted by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a multiprogram science lab supported by the U.S. Department of Energy. Technologies developed at Berkeley Lab have generated billions of dollars in revenue and thousands of jobs. Activate has supported Cyclotron Road in partnership with Berkeley Lab since 2016.
Our Boston location sits in the heart of a world-renowned innovation hub. Activate Fellows in Boston collaborate with scientists at state-of-the art research facilities and university labs. Our anchor partner in Boston is MIT Lincoln Laboratory, a federally funded research laboratory operated for the U.S. Department of Defense by MIT. Applications for Activate Boston will open alongside Cyclotron Road on October 1st, 2019.
Every innovator’s journey is unique, but the Activate Fellowship is consistent across locations: Two years spent turning a technology concept into a product or business, with the support of a world-class research laboratory, rigorous mentorship, and a community of peers.
Activate Fellows work across eight impact areas, aligned with our broader mission to redefine the way science serves society and sustains the planet. In each of these areas, Activate is assembling a coalition of funders, commercial partners, industry advisers, and technical experts that can help guide your project, whatever path it takes. Not sure if your project fits one of our Activate Areas? Read the FAQ to learn more.
Activate Fellows are supported by leading innovation agencies and philanthropies.
