Activate partners with funders and leading research institutions to support the Activate Fellowship, a new path for top scientists and engineers to transform their discoveries into world-changing technologies. Since 2015, Activate has supported more than 50 innovators developing transformative energy, climate, and manufacturing technologies, resulting in more than 30 new companies that have collectively raised more than $100M to support their work. The two-year Activate Fellowship provides funding, access to world-class research facilities, entrepreneurial mentorship, networking, and education. Activate’s fellowship model was originally developed at Cyclotron Road, our Berkeley location, in partnership with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. 

Position Summary
Activate has established a trusted network of supporting partners, spanning some of the world’s most influential government agencies, corporations, and philanthropies. These partners provide funding, knowledge, and relationships that are the lifeline of our programs and impact. For Activate to grow, our partnerships must thrive. We seek a Chief Growth Officer to oversee all partnerships and supporting revenue for Activate. This leader will identify, cultivate and manage strategic relationships across a broad spectrum of stakeholders, and manage a team with proven performance in attracting world-class partners to our organization. The Chief Growth Officer will be hired as a full-­time employee of Activate with competitive salary and full benefits and report to the CEO.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and manage strategic partnerships across government, industry, and philanthropy with the goal of strengthening the organization’s revenue base, impact potential, and brand

  • Grow and manage a team that will drive and be accountable for development, sales, and management of key stakeholders

  • Work closely with the executive team to continually evolve and improve the organization’s partnership strategy and revenue model.

  • Oversee development of marketing and communication materials needed to recruit new partners and keep current partners informed and engaged.

  • Represent Activate at high profile events and public forums

Ideal Candidate

  • Has 10+ years and a proven track record in business development, sales, or fundraising, and preferably direct experience working with public agencies, philanthropic donors and multinational corporations

  • Wakes up thinking about how to strengthen relationships, build connections and create value for partners

  • Has exceptional leadership, communication and organizational management skills

  • Has a strong network with research, development, or technology organizations across government and industry

  • Feels like the world's scientific and entrepreneurial talent should be focused on more serious pursuits than dog-walking apps

  • Understands that innovation starts with people, not ideas

  • Is preferably based in the Bay Area, CA, Boston, MA, or Washington, DC
